I decided that since this is more than likely Brett Favre’s final season as an NFL quarterback, I would post about the records he is close to. I will also give my opinion on whether or not he will break them.So let’s take a look.
Career Pass Attempts
Dan Marino - 8358
Brett Favre -8223
In the new offense, without a running back that can be counted on to take some pressure off Brett, I think its a given Favre will far surpass the 135 attempts he needs to break this record. Favre-1 Marino-0
Career Passing Yards
Marino- 61361
Favre - 57500
This one could be close. He needs 3,862 yards to pass up Marino, and had 3,885 last year. Another year like the last one and he’s golden. If his young receivers start dropping passes this could be the one record Marino holds onto. Favre-1 Marino- 1/2
Career Touchdown Passes
Marino - 420
Favre - 414
Seven TDs is all he needs to pass Marino on this one. This could happen as soon as week 2. My prediction is that he will break the record on week 4 against the Vikings. Favre-2 Marino- 1/2
Career Games of 4 or more Touchdowns
Marino - 21
Favre - 19
3 games of 4 or more TDs…that should be doable. These Are the opponents I think Favre will do well against. The Vikings(at least once) The Giants, the Redskins, the Raiders, and the Chiefs. I am predicting this will happen, even though he is not as prolific a touchdown passer as he used to be. Favre -3 Marino- 1/2
Career Wins by a Quarterback
John Elway- 147
Dan Marino and Brett Favre- 146
2 wins…and Marino gets passed again. Look for a celebration of this record being broken in week 4 against Minnesota. Ahhhh…breaking records against the Vikings is so satisfying. Favre-4 Marino-1/2
Career Interceptions
George Blanda- 277
Favre- 273
Marino- really low on the list
Pretty much a forgone conclusion that this dubious record will be broken this season as well. Sadly this one could be broken against the Vikings as well, and if not then the following week against Chicago. You win this round…MARINO.
Favre-4 Marino- 2.5(2 points for not being in the top ten)
Dan Marino is considered by most to be the greatest quarterback to ever play the game, a Super Bowl Trophy, 3 MVPs, and numerous other awards, Favre still is not always favorably compared to the throwing fish. But after his 17th season, his records of consecutive starts, and the records he will break this year, is there doubt that he deserves to stand along side Marino, Elway, Starr, and Unitas?
Not in my mind.
